Mission

This NKUA Observatory monitors and communicates research on existential threats to humanity and life on Earth. Through regular outputs, including an Annual Report, it documents research conducted at the National and Kapodistrian University of Athens, across Greece’s research institutions, and internationally, drawing on the work of leading relevant observatories and research centres/institutes worldwide. Comparable observatories and related institutions have been established in recent years at leading international universities, including Oxford, Cambridge, MIT, and Stanford.

The Observatory aims to support informed understanding and response to existential threats, with particular emphasis on linking their global dimensions to local and regional contexts, especially that of Greece. Its work constitutes a contribution of national significance and is disseminated to policymakers, academic and research institutions, the business community, civil society, and the media.
